We’ve all been there – one flush just doesn’t seem to do the job. Not only does it force you to use more water, but having to flush multiple times is just inconvenient. When a toilet is flushed, water is released from the back tank and then goes down the drain. But there are a variety of issues that could cause your toilet to have a weak flush. Here are some quick tips you can try to get your toilet to flush stronger.
Clean the Toilet
It may seem like common sense, but sometimes the buildup of debris can block the flow of water from inside the toilet bowl. Turn off the water on your toilet and thoroughly scrub the inside of the bowl with a toilet brush and an appropriate cleaning product. After you’re done cleaning, flush the toilet to see if it’s improved.
Close Your Water Valve
Most toilets feed water through a valve that’s near the back of the toilet. Check to make sure that the valve is fully in the “on” position. If it isn’t, turn the valve counterclockwise until you no longer can. If the valve is only partially closed, it can have a significant impact on the power of the toilet flush.
Check the Water Level
For your toilet to flush properly, the water needs to be at the right level. Remove the back of the toilet tank and see if the water sits one inch below the overflow tube. If the water is too low, you can raise the water level to the right height by using the float inside the tank. There are two different float models, so be sure you know which one you’re dealing with:
- Ball float models: Just turn the top of the fill valve clockwise until the water level rises to the right level.
- Cylinder float models: Press the clip on the side of the cylinder float and pull it upward until the water gets to the right level.
